Teaching mindfulness to kids.

SITTING AND BREATHING

When teaching mindfulness to kids, start by allowing them to practice it every day. This is the best way for them to develop a habit and improve their focus. To help them get started, you can take a walk with them, or play a game together. For example, your children can sit cross-legged and breathe in deeply. The longer they breathe in, the deeper their breath will be. Using this activity to help them focus on their breathing can help them become more aware of their thoughts and bodies.

PLAY GAMES

Another way to teach your child about mindfulness is to play a simple game with them. One of the best ways to do this is by letting them watch a food video and name a fruit or vegetable. You can also play with the activity as your kids wait in the kitchen. They should be given visual cues to pay attention to. Then, when the video ends, ask them to pay attention to the pictures.

LETTING GO

One way to teach mindfulness to your child is to let go of your own perfection. Whether your son has a chocolate stain on his sweater or a low grade on his physics test, the result isn't the end of the world. It's important to let go of perfectionism as a parent so that you can better understand your child's needs and feelings. Your child will learn to accept a situation as it is, regardless of how it may feel. They will be more likely to apply mindfulness to themselves.
